Vieira along with his family moved from Senegal to Dreux (in France) when he was just eight years old. He began his career with Cannes at the age of 17 and made 49 appearances during the 1994-95 season in which he scored two goals.

Debut

Vieira made his international debut for France in 1997 in a match against the Netherlands and was named also named in the French squad for the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Rise to glory

In August 1996, when Vieira joined Arsenal and stayed with them for around 10 years with them where his first goal for them came against Derby County on December 8, 1996, in a 2-2 draw match. He ended up playing 38 games in that season and helping Arsenal to finish at the third place in the UEFA Champions League. He played 38 matches in that season and helped Arsenal to finish at the third position in UEFA Champions League. 1998-99 was successful for him with Arsenal as he was named in his PFA Team of the year for his consistent performances.

Juventus

After spending many more years with Arsenal, Vieira was transferred to Juventus in 2005 in a deal worth £13.75 million but he was not able to play much for them while he also got a groin injury and his performances started to decline. He then joined Internazionale but his wish to play with a higher team could not stick him there for too long and he moved to Inter Milan. As the club already had players like Sulley Muntari and Thiago Motta, Vieira was not given much importance.

Manchester City

On January 8, 2010, it was confirmed that Vieira will play with Manchester City with his former Arsenal teammates like Kolo Toure and Silvinho. He made his debut for Manchester City in a 2-1 losing match against Hull City and a few days later, his first goal for them came on April 3, 2010, in a 6-1 winning match against Burnley.
